Inauguration of Confucius Institute at Chittagong University and Thematic Symposium with Yunnan Provincial Committee Delegation

DHAKA, September 26, 2026 — The inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute at the University of Chittagong was held at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.Distinguished guests from China and Bangladesh attended and addressed the event, including Mr. Yao Wen, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh; Mr. Zhao Junmin, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee; Prof. Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun, Member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh; Mr. Ruan Chaoqi, Party Secretary of Yunnan Minzu University; and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chittagong. A/Prof .Wang Liqiong, Chinese Director of the SMHHCC and Mr. Mohiuddin Taher, Bangladeshi Director of SMHHCC, attended the event upon invitation. Approximately 200 participants—including officials from Bangladeshi educational institutions, local mainstream media, the Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh, Chinese-funded enterprises, as well as faculty and students from local Confucius Institutes and Classrooms—witnessed this historic moment.

The ceremony commenced in a solemn and warm atmosphere. Guests from both nations delivered speeches reviewing the fruitful achievements of Sino-Bangladeshi cooperation in education and culture while looking forward to future prospects. The speakers spoke highly of the essential bridge role played by Confucius Institutes and Classrooms in deepening people-to-people exchanges and mutual friendship between the two countries. They unanimously noted that the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Chittagong marks another significant milestone in bilateral educational cooperation, injecting fresh momentum into Chinese language teaching and cultural dissemination in Bangladesh, while expanding the depth and breadth of educational collaboration. Following the addresses, H.E.Ambassador Yao Wen, Standing Committee Member Zhao Junmin, and Bangladeshi dignitaries jointly unveiled the plaque for the new Confucius Institute amid warm applause.

Following the ceremony, the delegation from the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee proceeded to Confucius Institute at North South University to convene a thematic symposium with Chinese directors of local Confucius Institutes and Classrooms. The Chinese directors presented detailed reports on their respective institutional features, educational achievements, and future strategic plans. A/Prof Wang Liqiong reported on the overall operational performance, teaching practices, and phased progress achieved by the SMHHCC in promoting Chinese language education and Chinese culture locally. The delegation commended the Classroom's efforts and accomplishments in fostering cross-cultural understanding and provided guidance on its future development and educational cooperation. Mr. Li Shaopeng, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, stated that Confucius Institute and Classroom in Bangladesh serve as vital forces in promoting Chinese language education and facilitating cultural exchanges. He reaffirmed that the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh will continue to fully support their initiatives, help connect local resources, and assist in addressing practical operational challenges to ensure high-quality development.

This event not only witnessed new achievements in Chinese language education in Bangladesh but also further clarified the future direction of SMHHCC. Seizing this opportunity, SMHHCC remains committed to enhancing teaching quality, enriching cultural exchange activities, and making greater contributions to deepening traditional friendship and humanitarian cooperation between China and Bangladesh.
